When addressing water damage there are 3 Categories recognized. As the category level rises so does the contamination.Clean water, or Category 1, is water from a broken pipe or a sink without any contaminants. Though category 1 may be harmless it can quickly become contaminated and change from a Category 1 to a Category 2 and pose new health hazards.
Category 2 water can come from a variety of sources:
- Category 1 water left for over 72 hours
- Leaking washing machines
- Leaking dishwashers
- Leaking toilet tanks
- Broken aquariums or aquarium accessories
- Standing water
Category 2 water damage doesn’t need to stand or age to become contaminated. Water from the appliances listed above are automatically Category 2.
Though Category 2 may not be as toxic as Category 3 water, there are many concerns or cautions to have when discussing Category 2 water damage.
- Touching, Drinking, or any other contact may cause illness
- Clean water can quickly and easily become Category 2
- Category 2 water can become contaminated with disease-carrying residue, leading to classification of Category 3
Water damage, Categories 1, 2 and 3, require immediate action. With any contaminated water there are posed health risks. To ensure restoration is safe efficient leave the clean up to professionals.
