Flash Flooding Preparedness for Kailua Locals?
6/14/2022 (Permalink)
Aloha! Our team in Kailua wants everyone to be safe in a flooding situation. The City and County of Honolulu website offer this information on what you can do to prepare for a flood:
Know your flood risk. Your home or business may be subject to flooding from even light rainfall, high tides, upstream debris or development, high surf, storms, hurricanes, tsunamis, dam failure, sea level rise, coastal erosion, or some combination of these hazards. Be aware of streams, drainage channels, roads, culverts, and other areas known to flood around your home or business.
Keep important documents in a waterproof container.
Prepare your home. Store valuables in higher places. Declutter drains and gutters. Consider more permanent measures to protect your home, such as wet/dry flood proofing and rain gardens.
Gather emergency supplies in case you need to evacuate prior to flooding or if roads are flooded, and you are trapped in your home.
Plan how you will leave and where you will go if you are advised to evacuate.
Check the weather forecast and flood alerts before hiking or outdoor activities. Hikers on Oahu have required rescues and have died from flash floods and landslides.
